For many, cycling represents freedom. And in South Africa, few names are more closely associated with freedom than Nelson Mandela.

The Nelson Mandela Legacy RIDE4HOPE is one of the flagship initiatives commemorating Mandela’s enduring legacy, creating a platform to carry his message of hope across the country. The ride follows a symbolic route from Vilakazi Street in Soweto to the Nelson Mandela Capture Site in Howick, connecting communities while raising support for meaningful social impact projects.

Thanks to sponsorship support from Publicis, one of our team members was able to take part in this year’s tour and witness firsthand the difference these initiatives make. Over several days, the tour visited schools facing significant challenges yet filled with learners who remain determined to build brighter futures.

One of the most memorable moments came at a school where only three classrooms were initially earmarked for renovation. Through the generosity of sponsors and partners, the commitment grew into a full-school transformation. In one classroom alone, more than 100 learners were sharing the same space. Four additional classrooms have now been built, dramatically improving the learning environment and creating new opportunities for both learners and teachers.

For a participant who grew up in a disadvantaged community, the experience was deeply personal. Having benefited from the opportunities that education and sport can provide, the chance to contribute to creating those same opportunities for others was both humbling and rewarding.

The tour was also a powerful reminder of what corporate citizenship looks like in action. When organisations invest not only in communities but also in their people, empowering them to support causes they care about, giving back becomes more than a philanthropic gesture. It becomes a shared opportunity to create lasting change.
