As South Africans, Heritage Day gives us an opportunity to celebrate the rich diversity of cultures, languages, traditions and histories that make our nation unique. It is a time to reflect on the values passed down through generations and the principles that continue to shape who we are.
While our cultures may differ in customs and traditions, they share a common foundation: respect for the dignity of others. Across communities, respect, kindness, responsibility and care are values that are deeply rooted in our heritage.
This Heritage Day, it is worth reflecting not only on the traditions we celebrate, but also on the values we choose to uphold every day.
South Africa continues to grapple with the devastating reality of gender-based violence. It remains one of the most pressing social challenges confronting our country, affecting individuals, families, communities and workplaces alike. Behind every statistic is a person whose sense of safety and dignity has been violated.
If we are truly committed to honouring our heritage, we must also honour the values at its heart. That means rejecting behaviour that harms or diminishes others, speaking out against injustice, and creating environments where everyone feels safe, respected and valued.
At Publicis Groupe Africa, we believe that a culture of care extends beyond the workplace and includes looking after our mental, emotional and physical wellbeing. As we continue these important conversations, I encourage everyone to make time for their wellbeing and to make use of the onsite therapy support available to all employees. Whether you are facing challenges, working through a difficult situation, or simply need someone to talk to, support is available. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
As we celebrate Heritage Day, let us honour both the traditions that define us and the values that unite us: respect, dignity, empathy and care for one another.
